The Former County Seat
The town of Morganton has played an important role in Fannin County history. This quiet little mountain town used to be a bit busier more than a century ago when it still played the part of county seat. When Fannin County was carved out of the counties of Union and Gilmer in 1854, Morganton was chosen as the county seat and Morganton, GA real estate rose in prominence. A courthouse would be built here a year after that and the community grew slowly. A few decades after that, however, a railroad company would change its fate.
The Marietta and North Georgia Railroad came into the area in the 1880s and though the county asked that their proposed line be built through Morganton, the railroad had other plans. They built their railroad hub somewhere else instead, in an area that would be incorporated as the town of Blue Ridge. And since Blue Ridge was now easier to access, the county seat was changed to Blue Ridge in 1895 and Morganton eventually evolved into the peaceful residential community that it is today.
